A Guide to Stockwell, SW8
Stockwell is a south London neighbourhood in the borough of Lambeth. The area is bordered by Brixton, Clapham, Kennington and South Lambeth and is at close proximity to Central London. The name of the district refers to a local well-spring by a tree stump.
The area contains a number of social housing including the main estates of Stockwell Park, Lansdowne Green, Studley, Stockwell Gardens, Spurgeon and Mursell. One of the places of interest in the district is The Stockwell Bus Garage. The building was designed by Adie, Button and Partners with the architect Thomas Bilbow, who worked for the London Transport Executive.
Another locality in Stockwell is the London deep-level shelters, built under the London Underground during World War II. One of the entrances to the Stockwell shelter is turned into a war memorial. In January 2010, Jean Charles de Menezes memorial was unveiled in Stockwell Tube Station. The Brazilian electrician was falsely suspected in the 21 July 2005 London bombings in three tube trains and a bus in 2005 and shot by the police.
