Situated between Vauxhall and Battersea, Nine Elms is an area in the far north-eastern corner of the London Borough of Wandsworth. The name of the district refers to a row of elm trees bordering the road. The area is situated on the bank of the River Thames near Battersea Park. Nine Elms has primarily industrial character dominated by various railway lines, the Battersea Power Station and New Covent Garden Market.
The area has attracted some residential developments along the riverside such as Chelsea Bridge Wharf and three council estates – The Savona, The Patmore and Carey Gardens. The U.S Embassy in London will move from its current place in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair to Nine Elms in 2017. The Netherlands Embassy in London is expected to relocate from its location in Hyde Park Gate and establish in the district.
Embassy Gardens is an important residential and business redevelopment project in the area. The project for a pedestrian and cycling bridge between Nine Elms and Pimlico was awarded to the Danish architecture firm Bystrup Arkitekter. Another exciting residential redevelopment in the heart of the area is Riverlight apartment complex. The Northern line extension that will run from Kennington to Battersea will include a stop at Nine Elms.
