A Guide to Battersea, SW11
Battersea is a suburban inner-city district on the south side of the River Thames in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The area is bordered by the Wandsworth Common and Clapham Common, as well as by Fulham, Balham, Chelsea, Pimlico, Nine Elms and Stockwell. Situated on the south bank of the River Thames, opposite to Chelsea is Battersea Park, which is one of southwest London’s main parks.
In Victorian times the location was considered so unpopular that its station was named Clapham Junction in order to make the neighbourhood more attractive. Nowadays the industrial landscape is completely transformed and the riverbank from Albert Bridge and Wandsworth Bridge is filled with lovely apartment complexes, restaurants and public walkways. Clapham Junction railway station is UK’s busiest one, with around 2,000 trains passing through every day.
Battersea offers great culture and entertainment options. Every year The Affordable Art Fair takes place in Battersea Park. Another popular event in the area is the Battersea Literary Festival. The Battersea Arts Centre is a venue for art, theatre, comedy and music. Some important local landmarks include New Covent Garden Market, Shaftsbury Park Estate, Royal Academy of Dance, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and Battersea Power Station featured on the sleeve art of Pink Floyd’s album Animals.
